CEP Lookup — Brazilian Postal Code Search

Look up any Brazilian CEP (Código de Endereçamento Postal) instantly with our free online postal code search tool. Simply enter an 8-digit CEP and get the complete address details including street name, neighborhood, city, state, and the official IBGE municipality code. The search starts automatically as you type the eighth digit — no button click required.

CEP is the Brazilian postal code system, managed by Correios (the national postal service). Every address in Brazil has a CEP in the format XXXXX-XXX (five digits, hyphen, three digits). The first digit indicates the region: 0-1 for São Paulo, 2 for Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, 3 for Minas Gerais, 4 for Bahia and Sergipe, 5 for North and Northeast, 6 for Central-West, 7 for Southern states, 8 for Paraná and Santa Catarina, and 9 for Rio Grande do Sul.

Our tool queries the ViaCEP public API, one of the most reliable and widely used CEP lookup services in Brazil. Results are cached for 24 hours to ensure fast responses on repeated queries and reduce load on the external service. The cache is entirely server-side — your search history is never stored permanently.

The response includes six data fields: Logradouro (street or avenue name), Complemento (additional address information), Bairro (neighborhood), Localidade (city name), UF (two-letter state abbreviation), and IBGE (the official seven-digit municipality code used by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). Developers can use the IBGE code to join with other government datasets for enrichment purposes.

If the CEP does not exist in the Correios database, the tool displays a friendly error message rather than a raw API error. Network failures are handled with automatic retry and graceful degradation. For more Brazilian document tools, try our CPF Validator or CNPJ Validator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CEP?
CEP (Código de Endereçamento Postal) is the Brazilian postal code system, similar to ZIP codes in the US. It has 8 digits in the format XXXXX-XXX and identifies a specific delivery area.
How accurate is the CEP lookup?
The data comes from ViaCEP, which uses the official Correios (Brazilian postal service) database. It is highly accurate and updated regularly. Results are cached for 24 hours for performance.
What if the CEP is not found?
New CEPs from recently created subdivisions may take a few weeks to appear in the Correios database. Also, CEPs ending in -000 are generic codes for small towns and may not return a specific street address. Try searching for the main city CEP or check the Correios website directly.
